Pete Thompson maintains a diverse civil litigation practice that involves him in major matters throughout the United States.  A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, he began his legal career with the Cincinnati law firm of Paxton & Seasongood in 1979, and built a practice that was divided between frequent first-chair trial assignments in local courts and extensive involvement in major high-profile cases in Ohio and around the country.  His notable early litigation experiences included work on the MGM Grand and Las Vegas Hilton fire cases in Nevada and on a major case arising from a tragic Cincinnati rock concert in which eleven young people died in a crush outside the venue’s doors.  While practicing in Ohio, he also helped spearhead the formation of the Volunteer Lawyers for the Poor Foundation of Greater Cincinnati, a pro bono initiative that celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary in 2007.

In 1985, Mr. Thompson came to Washington to join the firm now known as Ross, Dixon & Bell.  While at Ross, Dixon, in addition to serving as the firm’s Managing Partner from 1996 to 2003, he built a nationwide trial and appellate litigation practice focused significantly on complex insurance-related disputes, while also handling a variety of significant commercial litigation cases.  His diverse array of insurance cases involved him in D&O coverage litigation arising from bank and savings and loan failures, the defense of bad faith claims against professional liability, general liability, and property carriers, claims under property policies, surety bonds, and reinsurance treaties, and disability insurance claims involving professional athletes, among many others.  His insurance litigation victories included, among others, a Wyoming case in which an insurer faced a $750 million bad faith claim arising from its denial of coverage under a $1 million liability policy; following extensive discovery, the district court granted summary judgment on all counts to Mr. Thompson’s client, a decision that the Tenth Circuit subsequently affirmed in a unanimous opinion.  Among his commercial litigation cases were various cases on behalf of banks, including a major matter involving a so-called “prime bank instrument scam,” and a unique case in which Mr. Thompson, based on declassified government cables and other documents dating back to the early 1960s, persuaded the Ninth Circuit to reopen a decades-old civil case in order to determine whether there had been a fraud on the court during the original proceedings.

In 2003, Mr. Thompson, together with partners Lew Loss and Tom Judge, founded Thompson, Loss & Judge, LLP.  At TLJ, Mr. Thompson has further expanded and diversified his practice.  He continues to enjoy a wide-ranging insurance practice, with trial-level and appellate engagements across the country that include major coverage disputes and extracontractual claims under a diverse array of coverage lines ranging from general liability, excess and umbrella, directors and officers liability, and professional liability policies to first-party property and builder’s risk policies, among many others.  He also devotes a significant portion of his practice to the representation of clients in the DC area, with particular emphasis on the representation of commercial real estate developers in connection with various contractual, insurance, and litigation issues that arise in the development and construction arenas.  He was named a “Washington, DC Super Lawyer” in 2007.

Mr. Thompson has spoken at seminars and conferences in the United States and abroad, addressing subjects ranging from insurance and litigation issues to law firm management.  He serves on the Advisory Council of the American Film Institute Silver Theatre and Cultural Center in Silver Spring, Maryland.
